"AOI and its retail council is a valuable investment for any retailer. Without the teaming of our various retailers working in conjunction with AOI, we would not be heard by our policy makers."

Product Stewardship Bill Scheduled

Article by: Betsy Earls - March 20, 2009

HB 3060, DEQ’s overarching framework legislation on product stewardship, has been scheduled for its first hearing March 31st, in the House Environment committee.

HB 3060 focuses its prohibitions and its take back requirements on rechargeable batteries and lighting that contains mercury.  For more information on the specifics of the bill, see Leading Issues March 13, 2009.

AOI has organized a coalition to oppose the bill which includes The Northwest Food Processors Association, the Oregon Metals Industry Council, American Chemistry Council, National Federation of Independent Businesses, American Forest & Paper Association, Procter & Gamble, the Soap and Detergent Association, the Northwest Grocery Association, the Oregon Community Pharmacy Council, National Electrical Manufacturers Association, Verizon, AT&T, Fred Meyer, Safeway, PhRMA, TechAmerica, Sprint, and Wal-Mart.

Over the next ten days, AOI will be engaged in organizing AOI members and others to testify against the bill, write letters to legislators, and count floor votes.  If your company is affected by HB 3060 and you are able to help, please contact Betsy Earls at betsyearls@aoi.org.
