Article by: John Ledger - May 15, 2009

On a 5-3 vote, a bill that will dramatically increase maximum DEQ civil penalties, SB 105, has passed out of the House Environment Committee.  Maximum civil penalties for many ongoing air and water violations will jump from $10,000 per day to $25,000 per day.

Vote on: SB 105 (“NO” is Pro-Business)
Representative Ben Cannon, Chair (D - Portland)  YES
Representative Vic Gilliam, Vice Chair (R - Silverton)  NO
Represenative Jefferson Smith, Vice Chair (D - Portland)  YES
Representative Jules Bailey (D - Portland)  YES
Represenative Phil Barnhart (D - Eugene)  YES
Representative Cliff Bentz (R - Ontario)  NO
Representative Deborah Boone (D - Cannon Beach)  YES
Represenative Bob Jenson (R - Pendleton)  NO

The bill now goes to the House floor where it is expected to pass.  The next step is to the Governor who, since it is a DEQ bill, is expected to sign it into law.
